You have always been envious of your neighbors’ spruced up garden by the yard. Flowers and lush shrubs abound in their tiny nook of paradise. You ask yourself why you never get to have that kind of garden. And, you usually dismiss such wondering with lines like “I don’t have a green thumb!” or “I can’t afford a gardener or a professional landscaper,” which are both lame alibis.

If you want your yard to look regal with a simple but well-maintained garden, you only need two things – determination and the know-how of such an endeavor. Psyche yourself to muster such will that would consequently urge you to look for sources of information on how to go about it.

For your own gardening happiness, here’s a rundown of tips on how to make your gardening by the yard endeavor a very rewarding one.

1. Deadheading

One good rule of the green thumb is to keep your border free from wilted flowers and dried leaves. Deadheading or removing dead flowers’ heads will promote the blooming of your plants. Some perennials such as phlox, daylily, and Lady’s Mantle get their growth jumpstarted by deadheading.

2. Prune selectively

It is a must to shorten the size of your annuals through selective pruning. This will help the plants to grow more.

3. Pinch out tops.

Certain plants respond when their tops get pinched out. Such plants include Coleus (a foliage plant) and herbs.

4. Fertilize lightly.

A minimal amount of fertilizer will further boost the growth of your vegetation. If you water your yard frequently, you have to fertilize it more regularly because of nutrient depletion.

5. Weed out.

This is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden by the yard. Moreover, removing weeds also provide better absorption of the soil’s nutrients. If you can’t help but use herbicide, do this safely and make sure that other plants don’t get affected.

6. Water them well

One good tip when it comes to watering your garden by the yard is to do it for shorter periods of time, more often. It will do well if you increase your frequency of watering a bit come summer time. But doubling the time you water your plants will do more harm than good, e.g. erosion.

7. Say no to chemicals

Chemical is just as bad to plants as it is with humans. So better avoid using it as a pesticide. Physical pest controls or other alternatives are better options.

With these simple tips, soon enough you won’t have to go green with envy with your neighbor’s spectacular garden by the yard.

With the hustle and bustle associated with daily life in the 21st century, many people have become intensely interested in developing a living environment at home that is soothing, calming and peaceful. Towards this end, an ever growing number of people have come to recognize and appreciate the benefits of gardens. Indeed, the life enhancing benefits of plants and flowers is significant.

As a consequence of an increasing segment of the population who expresses an interest in developing that perfect home garden — complete with lush plants and colorful flowers — many people are faced with the question of whether they should plant and create their own garden spaces or whether they should call in a landscaping professional.

In considering whether to “do it yourself” (when it comes to creating a garden and undertaking landscaping) or whether to hire a professional, there are pros and cons to be found on both sides of the proverbial fence. Of course, as mentioned previously, the 21st century is a point in time when many, many people maintain very full schedules. In other words, they simply do not have the time to spend creating that prefect garden or landscape for their homes. Obviously, for such men and women, a professional landscape artist provides the perfect solution.

On the other hand, precisely because life is rushed for so many people, gardening can be a great release and relief. People can obtain a much needed break from the machinations of their daily schedules by spending quality time working the soil, planting flowers and tending to garden plots and patches generally.

You may be one of those people who would like to undertake the creation of your own flower and plant gardens on your own. However, you may feel that you lack the necessary “green thumb” to develop an eye-catching and visually appealing landscape. If that is the case, if you are a person who would like to take up the creation of flower gardens and landscaping on your own but feel you need some guidance, help and assistance is available.

There are now a group of gardening and landscaping professionals available to consult with you in the development and creation of attractive outdoor scenes. These consultants work hand in hand with you; they provide definitive expertise and assistance in aiding you in the design and implementation of an attractive landscape complete with stunning flower gardens and vibrant greenery.

In the final analysis, there are benefits to be had both by understaking your own gardening and landscaping course or by calling in the aid of a gardening consultant or a full-service landscaping operator. When all is said and done, you will end up with gardens and landscaping that you will make you proud and that will make your home all the more appealing.

Many a person who is interested in crafting and creating a lovely lawn and garden spends a great deal of time scratching his or her head trying to figure out exactly how to get started on the landscaping process. Perhaps you find yourself in such a position at this point in time. Perhaps you have decided that you want to better and beautify your yard but you do not exactly know how to get started.

In this regard, if you are like most people you do not have unlimited funds to invest into gardening and landscaping. Consequently, you may not feel as if you are in a position to hire a professional landscape consultant or garden expert. In short, you may feel rather adrift on a what might be coined a sea of bare dirt.

One tried and true solution that you might want to seriously consider when it comes to gardening and landscaping is the utilization of landscape design software. Indeed, in the 21st century, an ever growing number of men and women who are interested in creating lovely garden spots are relying on landscape design software programs to further their efforts.

Many a gardener wrongly assumes that typical landscape design software programs are out of their reach for two reasons. These people assume that these software programs will be too expensive. Additionally, these people conclude that a landscape design software program will be complicated and difficult to utilize.

Of course, there are a number of high end landscape design software programs that are designed for garden and landscape professionals. It is true that these types of programs can require a significant financial investment and it is likewise accurate to note that some of these programs can be quite complicated in their operation. However, in recent years, a new generation of landscape design software has been created with the typical consumer in mind.

As a result, there are now a number of different, reliable landscape software programs on the market today that are both economical and easy to use. These programs allow a person with only rudimentary computer skills to be able to design truly attractive and appealing landscaping schemes.

There are a number of different outlets through which a consumer can purchase user-friendly, economical landscape design software programs. Of course, the Internet is a natural resource for such software (as it has become for so many items and services in the 21st century). Additionally, an ever increasing number of garden supply shops and stores in the brick and mortar world have taken to adding tried and tested landscape design software to their stocks and inventories. Indeed, many of these merchants offer classes and training in the use of landscape design software for their customers and patrons.

Any person who has spent time designing a landscape scheme and planting and tending to flower beds and vegetable patches has come to understand that gardening and landscaping can become a most expensive undertaking. Perhaps you are a person who has embarked on a trek involving gardening and landscaping. If that is the case, you likely have also found yourself interested in finding ways in which you can save money on necessary gardening supplies and landscaping materials.

In the brick and mortar world, there are a wide array of different store that specialize in gardening supplies and landscaping materials. As a general rule, these various specialty shops maintain an inventory of goods that tend to be priced on the high side. Of course, there are also discount retail stores that carry gardening items on a seasonal basis for what might be considered a more reasonable price. However, many an ardent gardener has complained that while the prices may be better in a discount retail store, the selection may not be as broad as a “green-thumber” might desire.

One solution that works for many people who love to garden but who do not want to break the bank in the process is turning to the Internet and World Wide Web. In recent years, there has been a steady growth in the number of Internet based websites that cater to people dedicated to gardening and landscaping.

In many instances, an Internet-based gardening business is able to avoid the high overhead costs associated with comparable stores and outlets in the brick and mortar world. These Internet venues are then able to pass the savings they enjoy on to their customers. In othere words, a typical gardener is able to obtain high quality products online (and a good selection of this type of merchandise) as a cost markedly lower than what might otherwise be found in shops and stores operating in the proverbial “real world.”

By taking the time to “surf” the Net — by taking a break from planting and tending to plants out of doors — a gardening enthusiast will be able to find exactly the types of gardening supplies and landscaping materials that are needed to develop a beautiful lawn and garden. A gardener will be able to find everything from seeds to plants to all manners of gardening supplies at one or another of the different Internet venues now in operation specializing in this type or merchandise. In the end, by shopping online for garden related merchandise, a person will be able to create exactly the type of garden and landscape he or she desires — and will have money to spare when all is said, done and planted.

Considering the hard work involved, I can still honestly state there is nothing quite as relaxing as spending the day working in my garden. Well okay, if not exactly relaxing, it certainly is rewarding and just gives you an overall feeling of well-being. An added benefit is if you are not physically fit before you start your first gardening project, chances are you soon will be simply thru the process of maintaining it. But is serious gardening actually a hobby? I dont think so.

I was in my 40s when we moved from California with my low maintenance, swimming pool and concrete backyard to a small community in rural Oregon. The old farmhouse we intended to remodel sat on over an acre of land which sported any number of weeds and a few overgrown shrubs. Most of which, had been planted in a haphazard manner.

For the first few years we just kept the weeds mowed while we focused most of our efforts on the inside of the house. In time however, there was nothing left to do but turn our attention to the grounds surrounding the house. Oh my, where to start?

By the time that particular summer was over, we had created what we called the courtyard right outside the kitchen. It was a small, private area with a waterfall and herb garden, along with a comfortable seating area partly shaded by our 50 year old oak tree.

In addition, we had put up a 60 fence, planted flowering shrubs and hedges, seeded a new back lawn and planted flowers galore. In addition to the herb garden now, we had an entry garden, a shade garden, a sunny flower garden and the following year we created a raised vegetable garden.

Im not exactly sure when reality hit amidst all this flowering and fruit/vegetable producing plant life, but hit it did. This gardening stuff was a lot of work! Not only did we have to dig and add nutrients to our rock hard clay soil, we had to plant, then keep the plants watered and weeded. Deadheading soon became a half a days work on a regular basis throughout the summer.

Once planted, my hubby who had a job and a thousand other things to do around the property left me to tend the gardens on my own. I soon discovered that weeding took me at least 3 days a week. Then somebody turned me on to Round-Up and I gave thanks to the Gods that be. Even so, you have to be very careful with herbicides especially around vegetables and ground water.

In surveys, when people are asked what kind of hobbies they enjoy, 8 out of 10 will include gardening. After my experience, I cant really relate to gardening as being a hobby, but I can sure relate to it as being a full-time commitment!

Want to be the envy of all the neighbours in the avenue then a water feature has to be placed into the garden. What ever fancy garden ornamentation that is to be – is entirely up to your own choosing. Because of the many designs and fixtures you may come up against problems in trying to decide what water garden feature to have.

The pond is a water feature found in most gardens today in all shapes and sizes and enhanced to the full with added extras to set the scene. Water lilies – bull rushes and reeds are just a few to mention. But it is the under water life that makes the pond more attractive (fish)
Remember when adding a water feature to the garden – take extra precautions in the safety measures where children are concerned.

Water garden features like the pond and the fish also need care and attention. Ponds have to be cleaned regular and fish need to be fed. Questions that crop up from many water garden owners is how to feed the fish – what type of feed should be used – how much and how often. Well the answer to that is there is no real fixed amount of fish food to give.

Of course there are some important issues on what to feed the fish. You have to take into account the fish`s size its appetite and their delicate digestive system which can differ due to water temperature changes.

Beginning from early spring to late autumn you will find the fish very energetic so it will do no harm to feed them every day. If the fish are prepared to take more then so be it. Remember you are not force feeding them so if the fish don`t want to bite then they wont. However, towards the colder months lessen the frequency of feed intake. Sometimes due to the fishs stillness at winter time then no feed is necessary

Try not to instigate problems for your fish`s well being by denying them the right food.

While the fish are in the mood to dine it is best to serve up a dish that will help them to stay active and healthy. Nourishing fish food is highly recommended. Bread/biscuit meal and ants eggs are less nutritional and can cause problems to the digestive system. Floating pellets filled with high-protein are very nutritious. By feeding the fish this way you get to see more of them as they surface for feeding.

Once the garden is the way you have always dreamed of full of foliage -shrubs and sweet scented flowers and of course your water garden feature – then remember that all the surrounding plant growth will attract insects so feeding the fish at this time is not necessary. Natural food supply should start to continue again with pellets in the autumn, this will help perk the fish up in their preparation to face the winter. Repeat pellet feeding in spring it will help the fish recover more rapidly ready for breeding.

Water features and creatures go hand in hand in adding beauty to the garden. Expect toads – newts and frogs to hang out in the pond area. Your water garden has not only given you a garden ornament that the neighbours would die for – it is the thought of giving a home to natures aquatic water life.

Spring time comes and with it comes the time to plant your garden. Garden tips range from the type of soil to plant in to ways to water your plants in order to get a full yield. However, when planting grape tomato seeds, the main garden tip is to plant them in a container inside. This will help keep them warm and give them a safe growing environment.

The best garden tip for planting sweet grape tomatoes is to prepare the soil properly. Using a good soil is essential and it doesnt hurt to beef it up a bit. Depending upon where you live, soil can range anywhere from very fertile to dont plant here dirt. When living in an area that has dirt that is not ideal for planting, go to a garden store and ask what type of soil they advise. The more fertile the soil, the better the plants will grow. If organic grape tomatoes are what you seek, using ordinary potting soil and an indoor container will keep the insects away and will make the tomatoes pesticide free.

Container gardening will help those who live in apartments or houses without large yards grow tomatoes indoors. These containers range from the average flower pot to multi-plant containers that can hold up to a dozen small plants. Another form of container gardening is to rent or buy a hydroponics system to grow your tomatoes in water. Growing grape tomatoes in a hydroponics system guarantees a completely organic, juicy, and super sweet grape tomatoes. The only problem with using a hydroponics system is finding a way to prop growing tomato plants up while they scale to new heights.

The greatest garden tip that youll ever receive is to water your plants. The more water that a tomato contains, the more watering it will need. Tomatoes are approximately ninety percent water and if they are not watered enough they will end up being shriveled and sour. No one likes a sour grape tomato, so keep your tomatoes warm and the soil wet and youll have super sweet grape tomatoes growing in no time.

In order to enjoy your time outdoor, you may have considered garden tables or other patio furniture. In todays marketplace there are many different options available to suit varying tastes and needs.

Almost every major furniture designer these days has come up with a series of outdoor furniture and you can find garden tables that range in price from moderate to outrageous. The thing that isnt always as easy to find is the set, that actually appeals to your families needs and tastes. The sad truth is that in todays market place, most furniture sets are designed for families of four. This leaves little room for larger families or for guests.

If you have more than two children or a large group of friends and family that you spend time with and share meals with quite often, then perhaps you would be wise in limiting your search to larger sets, or purchasing several inexpensive smaller sets of garden tables and scattering them across your yard or patio. This will allow several zones where people can talk more intimately than at larger tables, kids can congregate and play games, and or various groups can have their own sense of privacy even among a large group of people.

Garden tables are more than a fashion accessory for our yards these days. Weve learned that our yard is an extension of our home and we want to be able to enjoy that space as well as we enjoy the interiors of our homes, especially with the premium price that land commands in this day and age. Choose furniture for your lawn and garden that you not only enjoy the look of but that you also find comfortable. You will probably have this furniture for quite a while so it makes sense to make a substantial investment in the furniture that you choose.

Gardens Swing as a gift
I read a description for an American eagle garden swing. The words simply captured me and made me feel that this was the exact gift that I needed for my wifes upcoming birthday – I went out and bought a brand new swing the next day. Not the American eagle though, but a “Santa Fe Rails” Metal Art Railroad Swing. It is strange what happens when you take a seat in it it is like your mind wanders off in the second you sit back and relax. An amazing gift for your heart and soul.

Garden Swing and quality time
The hours me and my wife has spend together since I bought the garden swing has more than doubled. I am not talking about simply spending time in the same room. No I am talking about quality time with each other where the words and thoughts come in abundance out of nowhere. There is no TV or radio to distract any of us. It is just us. I am amazed how calming and relaxing a garden swing is. It is hypnotic.

Garden Swing and being a teenager again
Do I need to mention that our relationship has bloomed? It is like being a teenager again. You know, sitting next to a loved one on the porch and you want to kiss her or him. I am in love again. With my wife that is. I am so glad I came up with the idea to buy a garden swing. The best money I ever spend.

You and a Garden Swing
How about you? Do you have one of these garden swings on you porch? Do you recognize my description? If you dont own a swing, try one! Take care and happy hunting for your garden swing.

Monasteries with dramatic gardens, adorned with garden statues and water fountains, flourished throughout Europe in the first half of the first millennium, and along with cross, monks carried the plough. Hard work, which had fallen into disfavor, was raised from the dust by the monks. “It was the special glory of St. Benedict [the founder of the order to which St. Augustine belonged] to teach the men of his day that work in the garden, sanctified by prayer, is the best thing a man can do, and this lesson has never been lost sight of since his time, as reflected in the beauty of the garden grounds.”

Within the walls of Benedictine monasteries, therefore, were large gardens with dramatic statuary, water features, and hanging wall fountain gardens cultivated by all the resident monks, often along with smaller ones assigned to the abbot and the chief almoner of the community. Formerly despised by the earliest Christians as symbols of paganism, flowers were now grown to decorate the church. The roses were often grown in large stone garden planters and was held in the highest esteem. At Subiaco is still preserved the roseto, a little rose garden set with a large stone statue of St. Benedict. The rose bushes it contains are said to be the same as those whose beauty delighted his senses, and with whose thorns he was accustomed to mortify his flesh.

The coming of St. Augustine to Canterbury in 597 A.D. was the beginning of a new era in gardens for the British Isles. The civilization, arts, and letters which had fled before the sword of the English conquest in post-Roman times returned with the Christian faith. In England, the revival of horticulture and decorative gardens and the introduction of several new vegetables and fruits was brought about by the Benedictine St. Augustine and his disciples. The flourishing gardens sported water fountains whose design was clearly inspired by the fountains of Italy.

On the continent, monks incorporated fragments of Roman villas into their monasteries, and restored the former gardens, and added garden statuary. But not in England. There, little or no connection existed between classic and convent grounds. And although during the two centuries succeeding the advent of the saint, gardening certainly flourished within the newly founded monasteries. And to this day, their influence remains.
